I had no expectations with this one, only knowing that Julia Holter is really loved in the community, and that the album was categorized with this always weird yet promising genre tag « Art Pop ».
So what´s in there then ? Crystal. Refined orchestrations, pristine voice, not delicate but precise, not scholar but lush. Julia Holter’s talent both as a singer and composer is particularly impressing, every song has its moment where a new instrument joins in to add another layer of emotion, and it sounds so easy for her to create all this, so natural.
But the moment when the album made complete sense to me was when I was awe struck by a perfect song, and here I name Betsy on the Roof. The crescendo, the deconstructed piano line, the atmosphere during this song is one of the most mesmerizing one I’ve heard in a long time. And for this song only, Have You In My Wilderness deserves all the praises in the world for showcasing Julia Holter’s virtuosity.
