Hyperpop, Post-Industrial, Post-Punk, Techno
Eight years ago, she said she hated repetition. Back then people called her Malvina Meinier and she was making her way through the music scene with ambient, eletronic music and film scores. Indeed, three projects that were nothing alike. Now with her first name all caps, MALVINA is exploring all her other horizons with an album titled after her multi-faceted second name (also her domina name). Coming from classical music, now a pianist, composer, pole dancer and orchestra conductor, she decided that Mercedes would be a work saturated with sounds that would propel you into pleasure. If you listen to the first four songs, you’ll hear four different voices, while the instrumention constantly oscillates between deeply layered genres, from hyperpop to post-industrial and techno, with some hints at dubstep in Click Click and post-rock wit Carmen Sea on Incel. « Come to my dungeon / I’ll show you how I get my fun » she sings heavenly on the title-track. This sure feels like an enticing proposition, but behind this eerie tone hides a harsher reality. Because if Malvina both is « a princess and a gothic queen », this dungeon is also filled with whips, handcuffs and chains. « I like pop music, I also like when I dress up like a slut / Dominate my subs / Torture is my thing / I’m really fucked up ». MALVINA is a shapeshifter, she keeps changing clothes to find the perfect angle in order to assert her domination, and the ride is wild.
« Leave your manliness at the door / And come to me on all fours / I want you to feel helpless / Beg for forgiveness » In her quest for pleasure and power, MALVINA builds her empire over manhood. How to tame it, how to break it, how to rebuild it with her own hands. « You don’t have a feminine side / You just think women are fragile / Your chromosome is a Y / Your only purpose in life / Is to seek the missing part ». There’s a constant friction in Mercedes, men are reduced to submissive beings or toxic ones, but in both situations, they are dominated quite in the same way. That convergence between submission and toxicity happens on Incel with the double-entendre « You think you’re almighty / But you can’t have a hard on / Don’t worry about it / Lemme get my strap on ». Is this line pronounced inside of a dungeon or outside ? It doesn’t really matter, Malvina’s the dungeon. And on this adrenaline trip, as a listener you both embrace the sub’s and the dom’s perspective, proudly singing MALVINA’s lyrics while strictly following the tempo she requires. « Don’t you misbehave or I’ll use my whip / I was born to dominate you boy » she sings playfully on FinDom. While her body hits and bleeds, she unveils the many facets of that almighty power she uses for the fun of it. Or… does she ? Because there might be another layer to that need of domination and saturation.
« It took me time but now I know I love the power just like you do / It took me time but now I realize I’m just like you / I feed myself / Off other’s ache ». On Sorry Not Sorry, as in Forever, her tone is slightly different, melancholic, an inner reflection. And just like another symptom, those two songs are separated by an interlude called Whip It, an entrechment into straightforward BDSM to forget the anxieties : « Say you adore me / Even though it’s not enough » is one of them on Sorry Not Sorry. Because if Mercedes is deeply anchored in the immediacy of pleasure, it’s also inscribed in a lineage. The album’s artwork features MALVINA’s great-great-grandmother’s handkerchief. Six generations of feminity are portrayed here. And on Forever : « If you are burning / I’ll pop a tear / If everything aches / It’s on me / I’ll shine a light onto your world / That’ll be infinite / Forever / I would never deny / Our teenage dramas / Cause they made us who we are ». We built who we are upon imperfections that were already there, and others we made up, but ultimately what counts is what we’re going to do with all that. « Look at us now, on top everything / Staring down at the dark depths beneath / Hold my hand, it’s okay to sink in » she admits on Forever. Of course domination might also be a way to distract your thoughts from other matters, but as soon as you recognize how your craving for power can be devouring and unheathly, it becomes a lot safer. And the environment MALVINA is building here as never been this safe before.
Because even if MALVINA also portrays herself as the subject of others’ desire, she reminds us all that there’s a distance between the one who desires and the one who’s desired. « Pornhub on your computer screen / MY OF [Only Fans] on your phone / Take a good look cause you’ll never / Get that close, that close ». By solidifying this distance, MAVINA strengthens her power even more. Now she even own’s other people’s desire. « I saw you staring at me babe, but I’m out of your league / Taking photographs of my booty / It’s alright I don’t mind, please have fun with it ». The domina is untouchable, and so is MALVINA standing high behind speakers and phone screens. Even when she sings « I’ve got feelings / With you I will fuck for free », it’s with the most robotic voice possible. But total control can be lonely at the top, that’s why her realm has other seats than hers. « Watch me gang up with my bitchy bitches » she says on the opening song For the Fun of It while the last song is called Stacy, Bree, Dixie, Mel, Honesty & Rita. When she talked about her past, she developed feminity on a vertical line, and by stating all these names she develops feminity on an horizontal line : the grid is set for a whole world of feminine domination and ecstatic fun to unleash.
The final song is the most club-like one off the album. It’s a pure celebration. « Stacy, Bree, Dixie, Mel, Honesty & Rita / they are all here to satisfy all your desires / Weird kinks, dom games, crazy fantasies » MALVINA just became the club itself, she’s the voice in the dungeon’s speakers, she’s the hand that guides, takes you, makes you bend, helps you ascend, she’s the « She » from above. In the final moments, all that is left is a bunch of words pronounced as if they were just another part of the beat : « whip, plug, chain, handcuffs, rope, gag, duct tape, nipple clamps, whip, plug », over and over and over. Listening to Mercedes will be one of the most fun experience you’ll have, because it’s an outpouring of pleasure. But on the way you’ll also meet a demanding, jaw-dropping and emotional exploration. This album is a world we would never have been able to visit if it was written by anybody else. And it’s rare to see so much freedom, so much intimacy and so much power put together in the very same box. « When I walk in a room / I am here on a mission / I only have a goal / It’s to get your attention » she tells on Incel. Every song on Mercedes is so clearly defined, that your attention never gets lost. MALVINA is 100% devoted to her music, and so is the listener. Walk in with no fears, and be ready to shudder from pleasure.
