Five years after her acclaimed debut, where do we find Norah Jones ? Not at the same place, she never makes the same album twice anyway. Not To Late is the sonic equivalent of tenderness. I find the melodies here maybe more minimalist than on her debut but more mastered too.
On songs like the heartbreaking Until the End and Not My Friend, Norah Jones finds a place where it’s whole about small nuances within her tone. And it’s those small nuances that make all the difference, giving this album a whole « bluesy » vibe that’s mesmerizing. It’s the same with the instrumentation. Guitar plays the same arpeggios all along with a discret distorted guitar in the background and a piano free as a bird, a small one, flying, resting, flying, resting, suddenly emerging from the silence with the brightest color ever, and then fading away without a single goodbye.
On the other hand, Norah Jones has never been this playful with the gorgeous Sinkin Soon for instance. Here, the guitar works like a drum and we are teleported in a saloon in Louisiana. She feels close to our ear, we can feel the recording studio around her which makes this album even more enjoyable because of how genuine and honest it sounds.
